Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India. After studying law in London, he went on to practice in South Africa, where he became actively involved in the civil rights movement. Upon his return to India, involvement in the Indian independence movement was taken up by Gandhi and non-violent protests against British rule were organized by him.
An Indian independence activist and leader of the Indian National Congress, a key role in India’s non-violent resistance movement against British colonial rule was played by him. He was an influential figure in the Indian independence movement.
Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance, known as satyagraha, was believed by him to be a powerful tool for social and political change. Gandhi believed that satyagraha, his philosophy of non-violent resistance, could be used to attain independence from colonial rule without resorting to violence. To this day, his legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
His birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday , and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. He considered the Father of the Nation in India and was commonly called Bapu.
